Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French c'est la vie.
Etymology: < French c'est la vie, lit. ‘that is life’ (late 17th cent. or earlier in contextual use in sense ‘such is life’, ‘life is like that’) < ce this, that, it + est is + la the + vie life (see vie n.1). Compare earlier such is life and similar phrases at life n. Phrases 9c.
Expressing resignation at, or acceptance of, things as they are; = that's life at life n. Phrases 9c.
