Forms:

α. 1500s– adversaria, 1600s aduersaria.

β. 1600s adversaries.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adversāria.
Etymology: < classical Latin adversāria things written on one side of the page, notes, observations (Cicero), in post-classical Latin also commonplace book (1509 or earlier in work titles), use as noun (short for scripta adversāria ) of neuter plural of adversārius (see adversary adj.).This usage apparently derived from the ancient custom of writing the main text on one side of the page, and using the other side for notes and corrections. Properly plural, but in English usage often a collective singular. With the β. forms compare -ary suffix1.
Now chiefly historical.
With plural agreement: miscellaneous remarks and observations; notes, miscellanea. With singular agreement: a book consisting of these, a commonplace book. Also in the titles of such works. In quot. 1610 in English form adversaries.
