Etymology: < Tamil saya, in other Indian vernaculars shaya, chaya. N.E.D. (1889) enters this under the triple headword chay, choy, chaya and gives the pronunciations (tʃēi, tʃai, tʃoi) /tʃeɪ/, /tʃaɪ/, /tʃɔɪ/ (for the first two forms) and (tʃai·a) /ˈtʃaɪa/ (for the third).
The root of the Indian plant Oldenlandia umbellata (family Cinconaceæ), used to give a deep red dye to Indian cottons. Also chay root.
