单词 chaffinch
释义

chaffinchn.

Brit. /ˈtʃafɪn(t)ʃ/, U.S. /ˈtʃæˌfɪn(t)ʃ/
Forms:

α. Old English ceaffinc, Middle English chaffynch, Middle English chaffynche, 1500s chofinch, 1500s– chaffinch, 1600s chaffe-finch, 1600s (1800s English regional) chawfinch, 1700s chaffinge.

β. Middle English caffynche, 1500s cafinche, 1900s caffinch (Irish English (northern)), 1900s cafflinch (Irish English (northern)).

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: chaff n.1, finch n.
Etymology: Apparently < chaff n.1 + finch n., probably so named with reference to the bird's habits, as the chaffinch can be observed foraging for grain left on the ground after harvesting or threshing.Compare Middle High German mistuinke , denoting a type of finch, perhaps a chaffinch (German Mistfink , chiefly denoting a brambling, now regional), a name that also refers to the foraging habits of the bird, in this case with reference to refuse or manure (see mix n.1). Perhaps compare also post-classical Latin furfurio , denoting a kind of bird that feeds on grain (a636 in Isidore), in a later British source identified with the chaffinch (compare quot. 1440 at sense 1), apparently < classical Latin furfur bran (see furfur n.). Notes on forms. With the β. forms compare the γ. forms at chaff n.1 With the form cafflinch at β. forms perhaps compare flinch v.1 Note on pronunciation. N.E.D. (1889) gives the pronunciation as (tʃɑ·finʃ), where (ɑ) represents what is pronounced by some speakers as a lengthened vowel /ɑː/ but by others as a short vowel /a/. However, other British dictionaries of the same period indicate a short vowel in this word, even where they show a lengthened vowel before a fricative in chaff n.1 and similar words.

OE translating post-classical Latin scutatus (also scutacus), a bird name of uncertain meaning which is elsewhere translated into Old English as ragufinc, literally ‘lichen-finch’, a kind of finch, perhaps a chaffinch (for the first element see staneraw n.).
