单词 chantwell
释义

chantwelln.

Brit. /ˈtʃɑːntwɛl/, /ˈtʃantwɛl/, U.S. /ˈtʃæntˌwɛl/
Forms:

α. 1900s– chantouelle, 1900s– chantuel, 1900s– chantuelle, 1900s– chantwel, 1900s– chantwell, 1900s– chantwelle, 1900s– shantwell.

β. 1900s– chantrel, 1900s– chantrell, 1900s– chantrelle.

γ. 1900s– chantelle.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French chanterelle.
Etymology: Probably < French chanterelle (although this is apparently not attested in the sense ‘singer’, but with reference to a decoy bird used to attract others with its call: see chanterelle n.1).The α. forms reflect a development of r to w which originated in Caribbean French (where it is regular), but also partially spread to English in Trinidad. Compare Caribbean French chantuelle, in the same sense, although this is rare in written sources and it is uncertain whether it predates the English word.
In the Caribbean, esp. Trinidad and Tobago: a leading singer; spec. (originally) the leading singer in a call-and-response song, such as a work chant or fighting song; (later) the musical leader of a calypso or carnival band.
