Etymology: < Korean chimaek (2002 or earlier) < chi- (in chikin fried chicken; < English chicken n., perhaps via Japanese) + maek- (in maekju beer (1895); < elements of Middle Chinese origin, apparently after the two kanji (bakushu , literally ‘barley liquor’) formerly used to write Japanese biiru (1724; < Dutch bier beer n.¹)).

In South Korea and Korean-style restaurants: fried chicken served with beer.Popularized outside South Korea by the Korean television drama My Love from the Star (2014).
