/ˌkrɪstʃ(ə)n ˈsʌɪəns/, /ˌkrɪstjən ˈsʌɪəns/, /ˌkrɪstɪən ˈsʌɪəns/, U.S. /ˌkrɪstʃən ˈsaɪəns/ The beliefs and practices of the Church of Christ, Scientist, a Christian denomination founded in 1879 in New Hampshire by Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910), which holds that God and his perfect spiritual creation are the only ultimate reality, and that his law is always available to bring regeneration and healing to humanity.Christian Science teaches that sin and disease may be overcome by apprehension of the true nature of reality, as achieved by faith and prayer.Quot. 1863 shows the collocation Christian science being used in a similar context by faith healer and mesmerist Phineas P. Quimby (1802–66); Eddy was one of Quimby's patients and he is sometimes considered an influence on her thought.
