Etymology: < affront v. + -ed suffix1.In sense 1 after Middle French affronté shameless, impudent (late 13th cent. in Old French; c1230 in Anglo-Norman as afrunté in this sense), use as adjective of the past participle of afronter , afrunter , affronter to lack or lose shame, to be or become shameless (end of the 13th cent.), apparently a specific use of affront v., although compare also later effronted adj. and Middle French forms cited at that entry. In sense 3 after French affronté affrontee adj.
