Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French affouage.
Etymology: < French affouage (1256 in Old French) < Old French afouer to light (1204), to provide with fuel (1264; < post-classical Latin affocare (also affoare , affogare , affogiare ) to make a fire (13th cent.; already 4th cent. in sense ‘to suffocate, choke’) < classical Latin af- , variant of ad- (see af- prefix) + focus focus n.) + -age -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin affoagium (13th cent.), affouagium (14th cent.). Compare earlier feuage n., focage n.
Obsolete (historical and rare). Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The right to cut firewood in a forest (forest n. 2) for domestic use.
