单词 afterings
释义

afteringsn.

Brit. /ˈɑːftərɪŋz/, /ˈaftərɪŋz/, U.S. /ˈæftərɪŋz/
Forms: 1600s– afterings; also Scottish 1700s 1900s– aft’rins, 1800s eftirens, 1800s– efterins, 1900s– aifrins.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: after adv., -ing suffix1.
Etymology: < after adv. + -ing suffix1 + -s, plural ending, originally after Hellenistic Greek ὑστερήματα (New Testament: Colossians 1:24), plural of ὑστέρημα deficiency, need < ancient Greek ὑστερεῖν to be behind, to come late, to fail to obtain, to lack (see hysteresis n.) + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare innings (see inning n.2).J. Hall (see quot. 1609 at sense 1) appears to have misinterpreted Hellenistic Greek ὑστερήματα , as if it derived directly from ancient Greek ὕστερος later, latter, inferior (see hystero- comb. form1).
1. That which remains or is left; the remnant, the remains; (Theology) a part of the suffering of Christ that remains in the flesh of man. Now Scottish and rare.In theological use with reference to Colossians 1:24. The term itself does not appear in any biblical translation, its use apparently deriving from the works of Bishop Hall (see quots. 1609, a1656).
