单词 cheetah
释义

cheetahn.

Brit. /ˈtʃiːtə/, U.S. /ˈtʃidə/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, cheetahs.
Forms: 1700s–1800s chittah, 1800s cheetar, 1800s– cheeta, 1800s– cheetah, 1800s– chetah, 1800s– chita, 1800s– chitah.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi cītā.
Etymology: < Hindi cītā < Sanskrit citraka < citra variegated, spotted (see chintz n.) + a derivative suffix. It has been suggested that ‘tame cheater’ in Shakespeare 2 Hen. IV ii. iv. 94, refers to the cheetah, but this is historically and phonologically unlikely, and the phrase is also attested elsewhere with reference to deception (see tame cheater at cheater n. 4).
A large slender spotted cat, Acinonyx jubatus, of open country in Africa and parts of Iran, which is the fastest animal on land when chasing prey. Also called hunting leopard.Formerly widespread in Asia, where cheetahs were tamed and used for hunting.
