单词 aftermost
释义

aftermostadj.

Brit. /ˈɑːftəməʊst/, /ˈaftəməʊst/, U.S. /ˈæftərˌmoʊst/
Forms:

α. Old English æftemest, Old English æftemynstan (weak declension, accusative, probably transmission error), Old English æftemyst, early Middle English eftemest.

β. early Middle English aftermest, 1600s– aftermost.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: after adv., -most suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms cognate with or formed similarly to Gothic aftumists last, showing a superlative formation (see -most suffix and discussion at that entry) ultimately on the same base as the comparative formation represented by after adv.; compare also Gothic aftuma last (the -t- probably belongs ultimately to the suffix, showing an extended form of the Indo-European superlative suffix discussed at -most suffix, and represented by Sanskrit -tama , classical Latin -timus (see discussion at maritime adj.)). In β. forms showing either an alteration of α. forms after after adj. or after adv., or (especially in later use) a new formation < after adv. + -most suffix. Compare also (rare) Old English æfterest (see after adj.).Apparently unattested between the early 13th and early 17th centuries.
