Etymology: Apparently short for chef de cuisine n.; compare French chef (1867 in this sense: see chief n.).
A professional cook, esp. the head cook in a restaurant, hotel, etc. Formerly also: the head cook of a large household (now chiefly historical). Sometimes with preceding modifying word, as master chef, gourmet chef.head chef, sous chef, pastry chef, etc.: see the first element.
