Etymology: < Russian čeka, < the names (če, ka) of the initials of črezvyčajnaja komissija, Extraordinary Commission (for combating Counter-revolution, Sabotage, and Speculation).
An organization set up in 1917 under the Soviet régime in Russia for the investigation of counter-revolutionary activities (superseded in 1922 by the G.P.U. or Ogpu n.). Also transferred.
