Etymology: < German Christophit (A. Breithaupt 1863, in Berg- und hüttenmännische Zeitung 22 27) < the name of the St Christoph mine near Johanngeorgenstadt in Saxony, where the mineral was first found + -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A variety of the mineral sphalerite (zinc sulphide), containing a relatively high proportion of iron.
