(declined as 4th or 2nd declension respectively).The post-classical Latin forms capmansus, capmasus, capmasius (from 11th cent., earliest in sources from southern France), apparently show borrowings < a Romance language. Compare Old Occitan capmas (c1120; Occitan capmas, cammas), Catalan capmas (1167). Compare the following earlier example, although it is unclear whether this shows an Older Scots form or an otherwise unattested Anglo-Norman form (earlier than the Norman Middle French reduced forms cited above):1364 in J.
