Etymology: < post-classical Latin chemia, chymia (1652 in British sources), chimia (c1260 in a British source) alchemy, shortened < alchimia alchemy n. (see discussion at chemist n.); compare -y suffix3. Compare Middle French chymie (1554; also 1356 as chimie in an apparently isolated attestation with uncertain sense, perhaps ‘mixture’; French chimie ), German Chemie , †Chymie , †Chimie (1605 as Chimy , 1594 as Chimia ). Compare earlier chemistry n. Compare also earlier alchemy n.
