Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cherry n., bouncer n., bounce n.1
Etymology: In α. forms apparently < cherry n. + bouncer n.; in β. forms apparently < cherry n. + bounce n.1 According to Latham ( Dict. Eng. Lang. (1866)) the term was coined in order to sell the spirit without paying duty. If this is the case, bounce or bouncer may be used in the sense ‘lie’ or ‘liar’; compare bouncer n. 2, 3.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˌcherry-ˈbounce.
