Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin advestire.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin advestire to clothe (6th cent.), to put (a person) in possession of (12th cent.) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + vestīre to clothe (see vest v.). Compare Old French aviestir , Old French, Middle French, French †avestir , Middle French advestir , adviestir (13th cent.; chiefly Walloon and Flanders; apparently last attested in Cotgrave 1611). Compare advesture n.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
