Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Chinese adj., chequer n.1
Etymology: < Chinese adj. + the plural of chequer n.1The game now denoted by this name is not of Chinese origin, but a late 19th-cent. German development of the game of halma or hoppity (see halma n. and hoppity n.), adapted to allow for a larger number of players. The new game was released in the U.S. in 1928 under the name Hop-Ching Checkers, with orientalist branding, and again in 1938 as Chinese Star Checkers, by a different company, actively claiming that it was ‘a game from the orient for all ages’. The nature and origin of the game referred to in the 19th-cent. evidence are uncertain.
A board game for two to six players, the object of the game being to move marbles or counters from one corner to the opposite one on a star-shaped board.The precise nature of the game in the early quots. is unclear.
