单词 christly
释义

Christlyadj.

Brit. /ˈkrʌɪs(t)li/, U.S. /ˈkraɪs(t)li/
Forms: see Christ n. and -ly suffix1; also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Christ n., -ly suffix1.
Etymology: < Christ n. + -ly suffix1. Compare earlier christenly adj.Compare Old Frisian kristlīk , kerstlīk (West Frisian kristlik ), Middle Low German kristlīk , Middle High German kristlīch (in late sources; German christlich ), all in the sense ‘Christian’. N.E.D. (1889), following Bosworth-Toller, records the attestation of Old English cristlic , but this is a ghost word arising from a former editorial error in Laws of Æðelred II vi. 11. 250. The form cristlice is in fact attested, but only as a scribal error (dittography) for christen adj. in a manuscript of Bede's Eccl. Hist.:eOE tr. Bede Eccl. Hist. (Tanner) iv. v. 280 Gif hwelc mon his agnum wife wiðscufe, þæt him mid rehte æ forgifen & geþeoded wæs, gif he rihtlice cristen [eOE Domitian rehtlice cristlice] beon wille, ne gegaderie he hine to ængum oðrum.
