Etymology: < the name of Afghanistan (Persian Afġānistān, Pashto Afġānistān), used as a type of a distant land + -ism suffix.The Persian name Afġānistān (16th cent.; < Afġān Afghan n. + -istān , -stān , forming names of regions or countries: see -stan comb. form) was apparently introduced to Europe through English, where it first appears in a translation from Persian; compare:1768 A. Dow tr. M. Firishtah Hist. Hindostan I. 141 Shahah ul dien Mahummud..marched an army into Hindostan, over-running Pishawir, Afghanistan, Moultan and Sind.
