Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Cree. Etymon: Cree cīpweyān.
Etymology: Apparently < Cree (Plains) cīpweyān, *cīpwayān, apparently < čīpw- pointed + -ayān skin, hide, with allusion to a style of clothing. In later use (especially as adjective) probably associated with -an suffix.Compare the isolated earlier forms Otchipawayons , Otchipiweons , Otchipoins on a set of related maps of 1785–7, reflecting an unattested variant *ocīpwayān of Cree (Northern Plains) ocīpwayāniw . The self-designation of the people is Chipewyan Dëne Sųłiné , lit. ‘people of the barrens’ (compare quot. 2008 at sense A. 2).
