Etymology: Middle English chevetaine , < Old French chevetaine, -aigne, 12th cent. semi-popular < late Latin capitāneus , capitānus , chief, principal, < capit- head: see captain n. The word underwent various corruptions in Middle English; but the form chev(e)taine under the influence of chef , chief n., became cheftaine , chieftain n., which at length superseded all the others.
