Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch ervinden to find out, discover (Dutch †ervinden ), Middle Low German ervinden to find out, discover, invent, Old High German irfindan to feel, perceive, to find out (Middle High German ervinden to perceive, to find out, German erfinden to invent; compare Old High German ūzirfindan to discover) < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of find v. In some instances perhaps partly also representing a reduced form (see discussion at a- prefix1 and and- prefix) of Old English onfindan to find out, discover, cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon andfīthan , andfindan to notice perceive, Old High German intfindan , infindan to feel, perceive (Middle High German entvinden , enphinden , German empfinden ) < the Germanic base of and- prefix + the Germanic base of find v. Compare afond v.In Old English a strong verb of Class III. Some Middle English instances may perhaps represent a variant of yfind v.; compare a- prefix2.
