Etymology: Partly (i) < (a) Ottoman Turkish afyon (Turkish afyon ) or its etymon (b) Arabic afyūn (also, with intrusive -n- , anfyūn ) < Hellenistic Greek ὄπιον opium n.; and partly (ii) (in β. forms) < (a) Dutch amfioen (1596 as amfion in the passage translated in quot. 1598) and its etymon (b) Portuguese anfião (1513) < Arabic anfyūn.
