Also used more widely, to deride a person or organization deemed to be performing poorly, or to wish someone bad luck.Quot. 1948 shows earlier currency of the humorous notion that chewing gum stuck to a sportsperson's boot, here that of a losing jockey, could hinder his or her performance.
