Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: English aduocacie , advocacy n.; Latin advocaria.

Etymology: Either (i) a transmission error for aduocacie, variant of advocacy n. (compare the alternative manuscript reading of a1413 given in quot. ?a1425), or (ii) < post-classical Latin advocaria avowry, patronage, protection (9th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources; compare also avoeria (12th cent. in a British source)), apparently < classical Latin advocāre advocate v. + -īa -y suffix³, probably after Old French avoerie , avouerie (although this is first attested later: see avowry n.).

Obsolete. rare.

Perhaps: an act of pleading or advocating.
