Etymology: Corruption of Telugu cháwaḍi, or Malayalam cháwaṭi, Dakhini chāoṛi; sometimes more accurately represented as chawadī, chowree, chouri.

1. A place for the reception and accommodation of travellers; an inn, caravanserai; also used for the transaction of public business (Yule).
