Originally North American.
1. Any of several North American titmice of the genus Poecilus; esp. (more fully black-capped chickadee) P. atricapillus of forests in Canada and the northern United States. The black-capped chickadee is closely allied to the Eurasian willow tit ( P. montanus), and was formerly thought to be conspecific with it.
