Etymology: < chicken n. + weed n.1, with reference to some of these plants being eaten by chickens. Compare earlier chicken meat n. 1 and see discussion at that entry, and compare also chickmeat n., chickweed n.With sense 2 perhaps compare English regional chinney-weed , in the same sense (early 19th cent. or earlier; < a first element of unknown origin + weed n.1).
1. Common chickweed, Stellaria media. In early use also (usually with distinguishing word): †any of various other plants related to or thought to resemble this (obsolete). Now rare.
