Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cholestérine.
Etymology: < French cholestérine (M. E. Chevreul 1816, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 2 346; < ancient Greek χολή bile (see chole- comb. form) + στερεός stiff, solid (see stereo- comb. form) + French -ine -in suffix1); in β. forms with suffix substitution (see -in suffix1). Compare German Cholesterin (1825 or earlier; 1819 or earlier as †Cholesterine , feminine noun). Compare cholestearin n.
