Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Etymons: Marathi chiṭṭhī, Hindi chiṭṭhī.
Etymology: < Marathi chiṭṭhī, chiṭhī and its cognate Hindi ciṭṭhī document, letter, note, promissory note, pass, of uncertain origin (compare Tamil cīṭṭu, although the nature of relationship between the Tamil and Hindi words is unclear).
Originally Indian English.
A short official note signed by a person in authority, typically written or printed on a slip of paper and granting the bearer permission to do something; (also) a voucher, certificate, etc.; = chit n.5 1.Chit is now the commoner word.
