Etymology: < chlor- (in chlorine n.) + -ide suffix.
1. Chemistry. A simple compound of chlorine with a metal or an organic radical. A compound analogous to one or more atoms of hydrochloric acid (H Cl), itself called on this type hydrogen chloride.
