Etymology: < Latin chrȳsanthemum, < Greek χρῡσάνθεμον the corn-marigold, < χρῡσός gold + ἄνθεμον flower, bloom; also ‘camomile’.
1. (a) The herbalists' name for the Corn Marigold (now C. segetum), a composite plant with brilliant entirely yellow flowers. (b) Hence made by Linnæus the botanical name of the genus to which this belongs, having species with flowers of many colours, e.g. the Ox-eye Daisy ( C. Leucanthemum) with yellow disk and white rays.
