单词 chrysoprase
释义

chrysoprasen.

Brit. /ˈkrɪsəpreɪz/, U.S. /ˈkrɪsəˌpreɪz/
Forms: In the New Testament (Revelation xxi. 1900s) chrysoprasus /krɪˈsɒprəsəs/. Forms: Middle English crisopace, Middle English crysopase, 1500s chrusopasse, 1600s–1700s chrysopass; 1600s–1800s crysoprase, 1800s chrysopras, 1600s– chrysoprase; also Middle English crisopassus, 1500s crysoprasos, crusoprasos, 1600s chrysoprasus, etc.
Etymology: Middle English crisopace, < Old French crisopace = Italian crisopasso, < Latin type crisopassus = chrȳsopassus, found in some manuscripts of Pliny, beside the etymological chrȳsoprasus, Greek χρῡσόπρασος a golden-green gem, < χρῡσός gold + πράσον leek. Schade quotes many medieval Latin examples of chrysoprassus, and -passus, also -pastus, -parus, and chrysopasion, -ptasion, -pasius, -ptasius, -tapsus, corruptions, and partly, perhaps, etymologizing perversions of the name. Since the 16th cent. the English form has been more or less conformed to the original Greek and Latin.
