Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymons: French afoundre, enfoundre, enfondre.
Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman afoundre (late 14th cent. or earlier), variant (with prefix substitution: compare a- prefix5) of Anglo-Norman enfoundre, enfundre, enfundrer, etc., Anglo-Norman and Middle French enfondre (of a horse) to be affected with catarrh (11th cent. in Old French in Rashi; reflexive), (of a person) to become stiff or numb with cold, to freeze (a1331 in past participle enfondu ) < classical Latin infundere to pour into (see infund v.). Compare earlier afounded adj. 2, afoundered adj., and founded adj.1 Compare also enfundying n., fundying n., and fundy v.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To become numb or stiff with cold. In quot. figurative.
