Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman afoundre (late 14th cent. or earlier), variant (with prefix substitution: compare a- prefix⁵) of Anglo-Norman enfoundre, enfundre, enfundrer, etc., Anglo-Norman and Middle French enfondre (of a horse) to be affected with catarrh (11th cent. in Old French in Rashi; reflexive), (of a person) to become stiff or numb with cold, to freeze (a1331 in past participle enfondu ) < classical Latin infundere to pour into (see infund v.). Compare earlier afounded adj. 2, afoundered adj., and founded adj.¹ Compare also enfundying n., fundying n., and fundy v.
