Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin citerior.

Etymology: < classical Latin citerior nearer (especially in the name of provinces, e.g. Hispania citerior , i.e. the part of Spain nearer to Rome), comparative of citer on this side ( < cis on this side of (see cisalpine adj.) + -ter , comparative suffix: see other adj.); compare -ior suffix². Compare French citérieur (end of the 15th cent. in Middle French; rare before 1690), Spanish citerior (1499; 1562 in España citerior), Italian citeriore (1547).

Chiefly literary and formal.

Esp. of a country or geographical region: situated on this, or the nearer, side of something; hither, nearer (of two). Opposed to ulterior.Quot. 1601 may be an instance of the Latin word.
