Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin citharista; Greek κιθαριστής.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin citharista, and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek κιθαριστής player on the cithara < κιθάρα cithara n. + -ιστής -ist suffix. Compare Middle French cythariste, Middle French, French (now historical) cithariste (c1390; c1223 in Old French as chitariste; apparently unattested between the mid 16th and early 19th centuries), Old Occitan citharista (c1350), Spanish citarista (13th cent.), Italian citarista (a1308), all in sense ‘person who plays the harp or cithara’.Sense 1 appears to show a semantic development which is not paralleled in the donor languages.
