Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French citharistique; Greek κιθαριστικός.
Etymology: < (i) French citharistique (of poetry) sung to the accompaniment of a cithara (16th cent. in Middle French), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek κιθαριστικός skilled in cithara-playing < κιθαριστής citharist n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier citharoedic adj.In citharistic art (compare quot. 1784) after ancient Greek ἡ κιθαριστική, short for ἡ κιθαριστικὴ τέχνη.
