In the late 16th and 17th centuries: a Roman Catholic conforming outwardly to the Church of England, in order to escape the penalties enacted against recusants (recusant n. 2a) from the reign of Elizabeth I until the Second Relief Act of 1791. Cf. church-Catholic n. at church n.1 and adj. Compounds 2.
