单词 church town
释义

church townn.

Brit. /ˈtʃəːtʃ taʊn/, U.S. /ˈtʃərtʃ ˌtaʊn/
Forms: see church n.1 and adj. and town n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: church n.1, town n.
Etymology: < church n.1 + town n. With sense 1 compare town n. 1 and also churchyard n. With sense 2 compare earlier kirktown n.Also attested early in place names, as Ciretone , Ciretona , Brendon, Devon (1086; now Cheriton), Ceritone , Devon (1086; now Cheriton Bishop), Cercetone , Cercitona , Devon (1086; now Churston Ferrers), Cherintone , Ciretvne , Somerset (1086; now North Cheriton), Ceritone , Wiltshire (1086; now Chirton), Ciriceton , Kent (c1090; now Cheriton). Compare also the following attestation in a copy of a charter of 882, although both the etymology of this place name and the identity of the place to which it refers have been disputed:lOE Bounds (Sawyer 345) in W. de G. Birch Cartularium Saxonicum (1887) II. 171 Þis synt ðara fiftene hida landgemæro æt Cyricestune. The precise sense reflected by these examples is uncertain, perhaps simply ‘settlement with or by a church’ (as is apparently the case with Cheriton in the parish of Brendon), or, alternatively (at least in some instances) ‘enclosure around or near a church’ (compare sense 1) or ‘division (of a large multiple estate) where the church is situated’ (compare sense 2); see discussion in Vocab. Eng. Place-names at cirice.
