Etymology: < the name of Arthur Herbert Church (1834–1915), English chemist + -ite suffix1 (see quot. 1865).
Mineralogy.
A rare mineral consisting of a hydrated phosphate of rare earth elements (chiefly yttrium; originally thought to be chiefly cerium), typically occurring as white needle-like crystals. In recent use also with following chemical symbol, as churchite-(Y).Chemical formula: YPO4·2H2O. Crystal system: monoclinic.
