Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Aepyornis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Aepyornis (I. G. St.-Hilaire 1850, in Ann. des Sci. Nat.: Zool. 14 209) < (apparently) ancient Greek αἰπύς high and steep, of unknown origin + ὄρνις bird (see ornitho- comb. form). Compare French Æpyornis (1851 as †Epyornis).

A genus of gigantic flightless ratite birds comprising most of the extinct elephant birds of Madagascar, some of which may have survived to the 17th cent.; (also) a bird of this genus. Aepyornis maximus was the world's largest bird and produced the largest known egg of any animal.

2000 Independent 20 June i. 9/2 Aepyornis, or the elephant bird—which grew to a weight of about half a ton and laid eggs up to two feet long—became extinct only 300 years ago.
