Forms: Middle English–1600s cerge, Middle English–1500s serge, Middle English serg, sherge; also Middle English–1500s, 1800s cierge, (Middle English cirge, Middle English cyerge, suerge, 1500s surge, sarge, searge, cearge, serdge).
Etymology: < Old French cerge, cirge (12th cent.), cierge (13th cent.), in Provençal ceri, Spanish cirio < Latin cēreus (later cērius) of wax, waxen, < cēra wax. The typical English form was cerge, serge; but in actual use the word went out about 1600, and occurs since either as a historical archaism or consciously as French.
A wax candle or taper, esp. a large wax candle used in religious ceremonies.
