Etymology: < post-classical Latin Aerianus (usually in plural Aeriani ) adherent of the doctrines of Aerius (4th cent.; 12th cent. in a British source) < the name of Aerius , 4th-cent. presbyter of Pontus + classical Latin -ānus -an suffix.

Etymology: < French aérien (late 12th cent. in Old French as aerïen ) < classical Latin āerius (see aerial adj.) + French -en -an suffix. Compare aerial adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives only the pronunciation (e̱ˌīəriăn) /eɪˈɪərɪən/.
Now rare.
