Etymology: Old English cilic, < Latin cilicium < Greek Κιλίκιον, a coarse cloth originally made of Cilician goat's hair, < Κιλικία Cilicia. In modern English, < French cilice, or taken anew from Latin.
Hair-cloth; a rough garment made of hair-cloth, generally worn as a penitential robe. Also attributive.
