Etymology: < clear adv. + cut adj.Sense 1 seems likely to have developed as a figurative use of sense 2, but earlier evidence for the latter is lacking. Compare the following early uses of clearly cut:1822 Edinb. Mag. & Literary Misc. Apr. 497/2 The ‘Moh-pan, or wooden plates’, is a species of stereotype [printing]; the characters are clearly cut in blocks of wood.1836 Knickerbocker Feb. 220 The present volume..is illustrated by numerous clearly-cut wood engravings.
1. With reference to something immaterial (as a concept, statement, phenomenon, etc.): sharply defined or delineated; easy to perceive or grasp; free from ambiguity or uncertainty.
