Etymology: < post-classical Latin civilista civil lawyer (from 14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin cīvīlis civil adj. + -ista -ist suffix, after post-classical Latin canonista canonist n. Compare earlier civilian n.
1. An expert in or student of civil law (chiefly civil law n. 1); a practitioner of this; spec. (the title of) the Professor of Civil Law at King's College, Aberdeen (now historical). Cf. civilian n. 1.
