Forms: Middle English cive, cyve, syve, Middle English cyuee, cyuey(e, ceue, ceuy.
Etymology: < French civé (13th cent.), sivé, ‘a black sauce for a hare’, (Cotgrave). Littré identifies with civet n.3, and derives < cive , chive n.1, species of onion, on Latin type cæpātum ‘made with onions’. In many reprints of Middle English books, editors have mistaken cive for cive n., chive, onion.
Obsolete.
‘A broth or sauce made of the entrails of a hog; also broth or sauce for the forepart of a fried hare, made of wine, vinegar, verjuice, herbs, and spices; oyster broth, or broth made of boiled oysters’ (Cotgrave at Sivé).
